Home Battery Backup Systems

Home battery backup for a house that stays connected to the grid. Each system pairs a Growatt hybrid inverter with LiFePO4 battery storage and an automatic transfer switch, supplied as one matched package. It charges from your solar array or the grid, and takes over automatically when the grid goes down, then hands back when power returns.

Partial home or whole home?

  • Partial home backs up an essentials sub-panel: fridge and freezer, furnace fan or boiler, well or sump pump, lights, internet and a few outlets. It needs a smaller inverter and battery, so it costs less.
  • Whole home backs up the main panel, so big loads like central air, an electric range or an EV charger keep working. It needs an 11.4 kW inverter and usually 20 kWh of storage or more.

How to size home battery backup

  1. List the loads you need in an outage and add their running watts; that sets the inverter size.
  2. Estimate daily energy: essentials typically use 8–10 kWh a day, a whole home 20–40 kWh.
  3. Choose hours of backup without sun: battery kWh ≈ daily kWh × hours ÷ 24 ÷ 0.9.
  4. Add solar to recharge the battery each day and stretch backup over several days.

Home battery backup FAQs

How long can a home battery backup system power my house?

About a day of essentials per 10 kWh of storage at 8–10 kWh/day. A whole home uses battery much faster, so 20 kWh may cover 12–24 hours without solar. With solar recharging during the day, backup can run for days.

Does home battery backup work without solar panels?

Yes. The battery charges from the grid and takes over in an outage. Without solar, it runs until the battery is empty, then waits for grid power to return.

How fast does it switch over in an outage?

The transfer switch moves the house to battery automatically within a fraction of a second, so most appliances keep running without a restart.

Do I need an electrician?

Yes. A licensed electrician installs the inverter and transfer switch, and your utility approves the interconnection for a grid-tied system.

Common questions

Before you order.

If yours isn't here, ask an engineer. It costs nothing and it's the step most people skip.

What if I'm not sure this is the right product?

Ask before you order. Send us what you need to run, or your pool or well figures, and an engineer will confirm the choice — it costs nothing. Or use the finder below, which sizes from what you actually run and shows its reasoning.
